Movie Night

The VNCS will be having another DVD night on Thursday April 29 at the Fairfield Activity Centre from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.  The movie we will be featured is Departures, a film by Yojiro Takita.  This film was an Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Language Film.  In addition to the Academy Award, Departures has received several other international awards and 10 Japan Academy Award prizes.  The Fairfield Activity Centre is located in the Cook Street Village at 380 Cook St.  The film is free for members of the VNCS, $5.00 for non-members.

SYNOPSIS
Academy Award® Winner for Best Foreign Language Film of the year, “Departures” is a delightful and sensitive journey into the heartland of Japan and an astonishingly beautiful look at a sacred part of Japan’s cultural heritage.

When his orchestra disbands, Daigo Kobayashi (Masahiro Motoki) decides to start over and moves back to his small hometown.  Desparate for work, he secretly takes a job as a “Nokanshi”, a funeral professional who prepares the deceased for burial and entrance into the next life.  But while working with the families of the departed, Daigo embraks on a sprirtual journey of his own as he finally experiences the joy and wonder of living.  A story of love, of discovery, of revelation and of the transcending human spirit,  “Departures” will linger in your heart and mind long after viewing.
