Savour the wonderful tastes of Japan (including delicious sushi, bento boxes and sweet manju desserts). Experience demonstrations of ikebana, tea ceremony, bonsai, shodo, sumi-e, kendo, karate and iaido. Enjoy performances by Uminari Taiko, the Furusato Dancers, Satomi Edwards (Koto), the VJHLSS Children’s Dance Group and Choir and many more!

NEW THIS YEAR

JCYL: Empowering Nikkei Youth across Canada – Erica Isomura Craigflower Room at 10:45am.

Kenzen Sports Karate – karate demonstration in the Jubilee Hall at 12:15pm.

Umi Nami Farms will be presenting on fresh and easy cooking with Japanese vegetables in the Craigflower at 12:15pm.

Shoshinkai Victoria will be doing an iaido demonstration in the Jubilee Hall at 1:15pm.

Japanese Animation Through Time presentation in the Craigflower Room at 1:15pm.

SPECIAL MENTION

Harumi Ota (master potter) will be doing pottery demonstrations in the Kids Room all day (you don’t need to be a kid to drop in and watch).

Shodo (10-1) and Sumie(1-4) in Jubilee Hall.

Tea Ceremony #1

Urasenke Tankokai Victoria Association
The Japanese tea ceremony, also called the Way of Tea, is a Japanese cultural activity involving the ceremonial preparation and presentation of matcha, powdered green tea. Urasenke Tankokai Victoria Association (formerly Nagomi Tea Circle) will be demonstrating what some refer to as a western style tea ceremony called Ryurei.

Empowering Nikkei Youth across Canada

Erica Isomura
Come hear about current youth-led initiatives that are mobilizing and engaging Nikkei youth across Canada with community projects, inter-generational relationship building, identity exploration, Japanese Canadian history, and social justice issues. This presentation will be facilitated by Erica Isomura, a participant of the Japanese Canadian Young Leaders Conference.

Kyudo (Japanese Archery)

Brian Angene
Brian Angene is a yondan(4th-dan) who was trained in Kobe. He is a founding member of the Kyudo Association of Canada and the founder of the Victoria Kyudo Association. Brian will give a brief explanation of the origins of modern kyudo, the basic movements (kihontai), and stages of shooting (hassetsu). There will also be a display of kyudo equipment and opportunity for questions.

Iaido – The Way of the Sword

Iaido is the traditional Japanese martial art of drawing and cutting with the samurai sword. The purpose of Iaido is to develop awareness, centeredness, sincerity, a calm mind, and mental and physical harmony through the practice of traditional sword techniques.
