2023 Annual General Meeting – Sunday, Feb 12

2023 AGM Announcement

Please join us for an exciting time at the VNCS AGM.  Hear about the amazing things the VNCS accomplished in 2022.  Find out whether we are wealthy or poor.  Have fun participating in the democratic election of the Board of Directors and the Officers.  It will be an event you don’t want to miss.

Sunday, February 12, 2023 – 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM
Esquimalt Recreation Centre, Pioneer A Room

On a serious note you will definitely want to be present for our guest speaker, Bradley Kurushima.  Bradley will show and talk about The Kiln Project video.  The Kiln Project is a dance film created collaboratively between BC-based artists Shion Skye Carter, filmmaker Brenda Kent Colina, and musician Prince Shima (aka Bradley Kurushima), filmed at a late-19th century Japanese charcoal pit kiln on Galiano Island, BC. Bradley would screen the 18 minute video and then talk about his experience and what he learned about the charcoal kiln pits on Galiano.

Board Nominations are now open for the 2022 Board of Directors

The Victoria Nikkei Cultural Society was formed in 1993 specifically to establish a sense of community for those of Japanese heritage and/or those interested in Japanese culture. Since its inception it has become a vibrant cultural organization that not only promotes Japanese and Japanese-Canadian cultural but undertakes advocacy work for the Japanese-Canadian community. We have become the go-to
organization for things Japanese in Victoria.

  • Do you have a passion for Japanese culture?
  • Do you feel strongly about standing up for Japanese-Canadian rights?
  • Are you concerned about the rise in anti-Asian racism?
  • Do you care about the future of the VNCS?

If so please consider joining the VNCS Board.

As a Board member you will help make decisions on what activities and actions the VNCS should undertake, help to shape the future of the VNCS and help build a strong Japanese-Canadian community. The time commitment is not onerous. We only meet 10 times a year. You don’t need to be of Japanese heritage to sit on our Board, just an individual who shares our vision and passion.

If you are interested please contact info@vncs.ca.

As the next Annual General Meeting (AGM) approaches, nominations for board members are now open and will be voted on at the AGM. You can download the form below, nominate yourself or someone else (be sure you talk to them first!), and then either email, or snail mail the nomination before the AGM.

Kiri’s Piano with France Benoit

After the AGM portion, we will be showing the film, Kiri’s Piano.

This is the British Columbia (private) premiere of France Benoit’s heart wrenching short film, Kiri’s Piano.

Inspired by Canadian folk singer James Keelaghan’s 1988 song of the same name, the film chronicles one woman’s sacrifice in the face of rampant prejudice tearing her Japanese Canadian family apart. Kiri’s once joyful piano music turns bitter when forced relocation and internment take away her husband, her home, and her family’s simple fishing life along the BC coast.

The VNCS will provide refreshments and appetizers during the AGM and the film, so come, relax and enjoy a great film.
