A group of concerned graduate students at UVic’s Department of Pacific & Asian Studies has organized a fundraising evening of music, dance and film in support of children left orphaned in Japan by the twin disasters of March 11. This event, titled ‘Victoria Stands With Japan’, is open to all and will be held this Saturday, April 16 from 6:00PM to 9:15PM at the Gordon F. MacFarlane Lecture Theatre (Harry Hickman Building #105). The Harry Hickman Building can be located using this map: http://www.uvic.ca/buildings/hhb.html
The evening will feature Japanese folk dancing by Victoria’s own Furusato Dancers, a screening of ‘Hula Girls’, the critically-acclaimed and uplifting true story of a unique effort to keep a small mining town in Fukushima Prefecture afloat amidst the decline of the coal industry in 1965, and a brief discussion of pre-disaster life in Fukushima and of some of the social and historical context surrounding the now-infamous Fukushima nuclear power plants by UVic MA candidate and former Fukushima resident Scott Aalgaard. Admission is by donation; no tickets are required. All donations will go to ASHINAGA, a Japanese not-for-profit association working to support children orphaned by the earthquake and tsunami. The suggested donation is $10.00.

ビクトリア大学太平洋アジア研究科の大学院生が、震災孤児をサポートする「あしなが育英会」を支援するため、音楽、踊り、そして映画上映を交えたチャリティーイベントを開催することに致しました。「Victoria Stands With Japan」と名付けられたこのイベントでは、４月１６日（土）、午後６時から９時１５分まで、ビクトリア大学キャンパス内にありますGordon F. このイベントでは、ビクトリアの「ふるさとダンサーズ」による民族踊り、福島県・いわき市を舞台とした第３０回日本アカデミー賞にも輝いた「フラガールズ」の上映、また以前福島県に住んでいたビクトリア大学のScott Aalgaard氏による震災前の福島県での暮らしや、福島県における原子力発電所の歴史的背景についてのディスカッション等もお楽しみ頂けます。入場料の代わりに「あしなが育英会」への寄付金を頂いており、寄付金の推薦額は＄１０です。
